(Psittacus erithacus)

African Grey Parrots live in lush African forests and enjoy dense forests. They are monogamous and nest solitarily in a tree with a hole for the eggs.

They are highly intelligent animals and often mimic human noises, attributing to them being popular pets.

To protect themselves against predators in the wild, they will fluff up their feathers to appear larger and can bite.

They play an important role in their ecosystem by spreading seeds throughout the forest – undigested seeds will fall to the ground drop and new trees will form. African Greys will also eat nectar which helps in the pollination of tropical plants.

Unfortunately, their populations in the wild are declining as forest habitats diminish. Losing trees with nesting cavities are especially harmful as it leaves them with limited options to build a nest. Additionally, since they are such popular pets, babies are known to be stolen from the wild to supply the pet trade. The pet trade can be detrimental to their wild populations for this reason.
